Why Should You Study Flute at A-State?

Comprehensive Flute Education

Flute courses at A-State are designed to give you all the tools you need to thrive as a 21st-century music professional. This includes everything from flute pedagogy, experience playing piccolo, alto, and bass flute, professional development, social media training, time management and goal-setting skills, and more.

Diverse Music Experiences & Opportunities

Flutists throughout history have been lucky enough to enjoy incredible flute repertoire. In Flute Lessons, Flute and Chamber Ensembles, and Recitals, we explore styles and characters from all the musical eras, including cadenzas and ornamentation from the Baroque Era to the extended techniques of the Modern Era.

Lifelong Friends & Supporters

At A-State, flutists look out for one another and help each other grow and thrive as we take on new challenges in college and beyond. When we audition for chair positions or performance opportunities, it is founded in the idea that we can only compete with ourselves and the musician we were yesterday, not one another. We are proud of our collaborative and compassionate atmosphere because it inspires musicians to reach heights they didn’t know were possible!

World-Class Education You Can Afford

A-State’s Music Department is consistently ranked as one of Arkansas’s top music programs, and our low tuition, low cost of living, and generous music scholarships also makes it incredibly good value. Students from all neighboring states like Missouri and Tennessee receive in-state tuition! The education and training you will receive as a Red Wolf is top-tier, as you make use of our highly sought-after Music Facilities while receiving daily instruction from over 35 world-class music professors.

Degrees Offered

Master of Music in Music Performance

Graduate students receive advanced, specialized instruction towards developing a career as a performer or college professor. This degree culminates in a graduate recital and prepares students to enter the professional sphere.

Master of Music in Music Education

This is advanced study for music educators in the public schools who already have their initial certification. Classes are scheduled to allow degree completion either as a full-time or part-time student.

Bachelor of Music in Music Education

Students become certified to teach music in grades K-12 in the state of Arkansas as band director, choir director, or general music teacher. Students can also continue on to a Masters in Performance or Music Education.

BAchelor of Music in Music Performance

Students receive rigorous training to prepare them for specialized careers such as orchestral or freelancing performer, composer, or university professor. Most students receiving a BM will then pursue a graduate degree in their field (i.e. Master of Music).

Bachelor of Arts

This degree is designed to prepare students for a variety of careers in art-related fields. Students with a BA can enjoy arts administration jobs such as working for orchestras, performance venues, and educational outreach organizations.

Minor in Music

A minor in music provides students with a comprehensive music education while pursuing a non-music related degree. It includes core classes like flute lessons, ensembles, music theory and history, and many of the same opportunities that music majors enjoy!

Life as a Flute Student

Music Classes & Rehearsals

As a music major, students attend music classes every day that help enrich their musical knowledge and performance skills. Courses include weekly private flute lessons, chamber music and large ensemble rehearsals, music theory and history classes, keyboard skills, and more.

Students see each other often in these core music classes, which is a great opportunity to get to know other future professionals and form new chamber groups of all kinds of instrumentation!

Daily Practice & Regular Performances

Majoring in music is a bigger commitment than playing in high school band, but this increased dedication and practice time is an investment in your skills and your future in music! Students will immerse themselves in their craft and can expect to practice multiple hours a day as their mindset transitions from “music is my hobby” to “music is my career.”

Students will have plenty of opportunities to showcase their growing set of advanced skills as they perform in the weekly Flute Studio Class, the Music Department Tuesday Recital Series, Flute Studio Recitals, and their own degree recitals.

Flute Club & Social Events

Because we work hard in lessons and the practice room, we balance the challenges with fun and inclusive group activities! We have regular social events for flutists, including food, games, and movies; hiking at Craighead Park; and our annual Holiday Party, where we make ornaments and winter hats for our flutes!
