What an incredible weekend! A-State hosted our first-ever Flute & Clarinet Day on April 1, 2023, and it was a blast! We had a great time hosting pre-college students, community members, and alumni on our campus for flute and clarinet ensemble rehearsals, solo performances, group warmups, workshops, and some good clean April Fool’s trickery. We had musicians join us from across the region for topic workshops and ensemble rehearsals, and the day ended with community performances for a hall full of friends and families. The flute choir rocked the house with pitch bends and beatboxing in Nicole Chamberlain’s Dizzy!
However, we couldn’t host an event on April Fool’s Day without a few jokes and goofball moments. The clarinet ensemble performed an arrangement of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up,” and the flutes led the charge with a chorus of rubber chicken squawks!
A HUGE thank you to my co-collaborator, Dr. Erin Cameron, her clarinet studio, and my A-State flute students for helping this day go smoothly. Also, just as big of a thank you to Dr. Steve Riley and Dr. Sarah Labovitz for giving these students a wonderful flute and clarinet ensemble experience, Dr. Lauren Schack Clark for performing piano with our private students, and LaDonna Gibson at AMRO Music for providing such awesome door prizes!!
I’m excited to see what these young musicians do next! Wolves up!
